I'm in a really good mood today for some reason so I am updating you guys of whats going on in my life, if you care anyways. Noted in my previous journal entry i was in the 1000 works for $10 show and i sold 15 pieces!! Kaaching! It's a lot of money for someone thats as broke as i am. It felt really good to see my work being appreciated by so many people that i definitely want to hit the gallery scene in the near future (if i can make it anyways).
Anyways, so i switched my major to printmaking and i absolutely love it. I took two courses in the summer to catch up a bit, screenprinting and non-toxic printmaking, and i did very well in both. I'm sooo excited for next year since i'm finally doing something that i love and something that really fits with how i work.
I've also been making sure to see whats going on in the art world today, and i've been looking into getting my work submitted for shows/events etc. The problem is my friends, is that i can never afford the damn application fee. Even though in most cases its refunded if you get rejected, I can't sacrifice that money for it since i'm barely living off of anything. So i've been looking for cheap/free venues and it so happens that my school will be doing an art fair in orientation week in September and i signed up for that. One thing i will definitely try to apply to is the Open Studio 100 Prints Sale, even though i'll be donating the print, it will be garunteed to sell because they're only selling 100 tickets so everyone will leave with something. Its just a chance to get my stuff out there! By the way, Open Studio is the big printmaking centre in toronto [link]
On a final note, even though i can't afford anything, i am in the market for a couple big items that i need. 1) after searching endlessly for the name of the cabinet, i desperately need a flat file cabinet (a.k.a map chest) to store all the papers and prints that are currently residing under my bed (not good). With the search i discovered that they range from $400-$1000, and they can't be found anywhere. 2) I've been experimenting a lot lately with plastic wrap and i'm very limited to the standard size roll that it comes in. So i will be looking to see if i can get the large industrial-sized rolls that they wrap skids in and such. 3)Finally i'm looking for a typewriter because i would like to incorporate text more into my work and i quite like the old type letters. So if anyone knows anything about these, i'd be more than happy to hear!
